This engraving is based on a fresco painting by Il Bronzino in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, completed in 1542. It represents the Old Testament scenes of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea from the Book of Exodus (Exodus 12:33-39 and 14:21-29) and Moses appointing Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land from the Book of Numbers (Numbers 27:18-23).
