The Temple

Arthur B. Davies (1862-1928) The Temple, soft-ground etching and aquatint, 1918-19, signed in pencil (Czestochowski 64), third state (of 4), from the small edition of about 30.

A fine impression of this evocative image. Also titled Antique Workshop, and Palace Under the Sun.

A superb example of the emerging modernistic experiments that Davies was undertaking at this time, a period in which Davies was generally regarded as the preeminent American artist of his generation. Marsden Hartley said of Davies: Often you have the sensation of looking through a Renaissance window upon a Greek world – a world of Platonic verities in calm relation with each other.
