Paysage au Soldat

Jean-Emile Laboureur (1877-1943), Paysage au Soldat, etching, 1914, signed in pencil lower left, numbered and inscribed “imp” lower right. Reference: Laboureur 136, only state, from the edition of 25. In very good condition, with wide margins, 6 3/4 x 7 1/4, the sheet 9 3/4 x 12 inches.

A fine impression, printed in a greenish/black ink on a thin cream wove paper, with a light veil of plate tone overall, carefully wiped to accentuate the tone in the upper right and left border areas.

A cubist-influenced landscape, with the tiny figure of the soldier the only indication that all is not well with the world at this moment.
