Guiding Spirit – First State

Arthur B. Davies (1862-1928), Guiding Spirit, drypoint on zinc, 1918. Reference: Czestochowski 55, first state (of 2), with the estate stamp lower right. A proof impression, in good condition apart from extensive creasing especially in margins but at points across the image, also some soft folds. 4 x 6 7/8, the sheet 8 3/8 x 9 inches.

Provenance: M. Knoedler and Co., New York, with their mat and label.

A fine impression of this rarity, before the extensive shading and roulette work, and the burnishing of some of the features of the floating figures, done for the second state.
