Weiblicher Kopf (Female Head)

Schmidt-Rottluff – Head of Woman

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), Weiblicher Kopf (Female Head), woodcut, 1915, signed in pencil lower right. Reference: Schapire H 180, only state. In very good condition, printed on cream wove paper, with full margins, 9 3/4 x 6 7/8, the sheet 13 1/2 x 10 5/8 inches.

A fine fresh impression.

Provenance: H. Neuerburg, Koln (with the blindstamp lower left recto, Lugt 1344/a)

After moving from Dresden to Berlin with the other members of the Die Brücke in 1911,  Schmidt-Rottluff was strongly moved over the next several years by Cubism and African art; Weiblicher Kopf of course reflects this influence.
