Early in his career Crispin de Passe worked for the publisher Philipp Galle, who had him make engravings of the story of Jonah, based on drawings made specifically for the prints by the well-known artist Maarten de Vos. This print illustrates the very beginning of the Story of Jonah: Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, saying: Go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness is come up before me.
