Noli me Tangere

altdorfernolimetangereAlbrecht Altdorfer (1480-1538), Noli me Tangere, woodcut, 1515. References: Hollstein 36, Winzinger 61 [with the monogram in the plate]. In good condition, with thread margins, 2 3/4 x 2 inches, archival mounting.

A very good impression (highly magnified in the above illustration)  of this great rarity.

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Karl Herweg, with his stamp verso.  Dr. Herweg was a distinguished collector of old master prints, with special emphasis on the prints of Van Ostade, and the German Little Masters such as Altdorfer.

Altdorfer was quite well known and highly esteemed by the time he made this small woodcut; during the period 1513-1518 Altdorfer, like Durer, carried out important commissions for Emperor Maximilian I, including woodcut designs for a Triumphal Arch in 1515, and a Triumphal Procession in 1517-8.
