During the period 1919-21 Laurens made a number of works involving the boxing theme in various media, including sculpture, drawing, gouche, paintings, moving from one medium to another perhaps to get a more complete understanding of the subject from an aesthetic perspective. For example the famed sculpture Tête de boxeur (sculpted 1919, cast 1921) at the Tate Gallery in London is closely related to the present work. Laurens was intimately involved with Cubism through Picasso and most especially Braque.
