Jean Lombard (1895-1983), Walking in the Rain, wood engraving, signed, numbered (39/160) and titled (Sous le Pluie) in pencil, circa 1927. Good condition, remains of prior hinging right margin verso, conservation matted. 9 x 6 1/2 inches

A fine, clear impression with good contrasts, on cream wove (JParrigo watermark).

Lombard was born in Dijon, studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and began showing in Paris in 1925, participating in the Salons d’Automne from that point through the War and into the ’70s. He taught at the Ville de Paris from 1938-57, where he influenced generations of students. Major retrospectives of his work were held Paris in 1990 and 1992. Much influenced by Cezanne and Villon, Bonnard and Matisse, his work evolved through various modernist idioms, becoming more abstract in later stages.

In this superb relatively early work, we can see both the strong influence of Cezanne, and the adoption of a personalized cubist aesthetic.
