The Bearing of the Cross
Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617), The Bearing of the Cross, plate 9 from The Passion, engraving, 1598, with monogram and dated 1597, marked 9; Strauss 353, Bartsch 35, Hollstein 29, first state of two. In excellent condition, trimmed on or outside of the plate mark and well outside of the border, 7 7/8 x 5 1/4 inches.
A fine impression.
Strauss points out that in this composition Goltzius’ “inventiveness reaches a high point. In contrast to the versions by Schongauer, Durer, and Lucas van Leyden, Christ is pictured as if her were leading the procession to Golgotha. Only the part of a hand holding the rope and a foot near the right margin serve to correct that impression so that the scene conforms to the record of the Gospels.” Christ is shown looking toward Veronica, who holds her veil, to be impressed with Christ’s image.
